The story

Base Set 2 in the timeline.

Base Set 2 was released February 24, 2000. It was a reprint compilation, drawing the marquee holos from Base Set and Jungle into a single new release intended to keep iconic cards in print after Base Set production wound down.

The set runs 130 cards and ships in Unlimited only. There is no 1st Edition, no Shadowless, and no error variant of note. For collectors, this is the budget tier of the iconic Wizards holos: Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Mewtwo are all in here at a fraction of the Base Set prices.

Print runs

How Base Set 2 was produced.

Single print run. The Base Set 2 set symbol (a small "2" inside the standard Base symbol) is the only diagnostic. Set symbols are in the bottom-right of the artwork as with other Wizards prints.

Because Base Set 2 cards were never released in 1st Edition, the variant ecosystem is much simpler than the original Base Set. Centering and surface remain the grade caps on the holos.

Collector notes

A common gateway purchase for collectors who want the iconic Base holos but cannot justify the Base Set prices. Raw NM copies are abundant; PSA 10s are reasonable. Sentimental more than financial in most cases.
