PSA: the default for Pokémon
PSA grades more Pokémon cards than the other three companies combined. PSA 10 prices on vintage Pokémon command the largest premium of any slab. The label color (red for PSA 10, blue for lower grades) is iconic. Submission cost is roughly $25 for standard turnaround and $200+ for express, with significant queue backlog at the cheaper tiers.
If you are grading a Pokémon card for resale, PSA is the safe choice nine times out of ten.
CGC: the up-and-comer
CGC entered Pokémon grading aggressively after 2020. Turnaround times are dramatically faster than PSA at the equivalent service tier. Slab quality is high. CGC introduced subgrades on the slab (centering, corners, edges, surface), which BGS pioneered but PSA does not publish.
The trade-off: CGC 10 Pristine and CGC 10 Gem Mint slabs sell for 10% to 25% less than equivalent PSA 10s on the resale market. The gap is closing but persists in 2026. If you are grading to keep, CGC speed and subgrades may be worth it. If you are grading to flip, the lower resale eats into the speed advantage.
BGS: the legacy choice
BGS dominated sports card grading for years and was historically the prestige choice for the absolute top-tier card. The famous "BGS 10 Black Label" requires all four subgrades to be 10, which is genuinely rare. For Pokémon, BGS has lost significant ground to PSA over the last decade, and BGS 9.5 trades at a discount to PSA 10 on most cards.
BGS still makes sense for one specific case: a card you believe is a true Black Label candidate. Black Label Pokémon trade at meaningful premiums to any other slab. For anything below that ceiling, BGS submissions usually return less resale than the equivalent PSA grade.
SGC: the niche option
SGC is the fourth major grader, well-regarded for vintage sports cards. SGC has minimal market share in Pokémon. The slab is high quality and the grading is consistent, but the resale market is thin. Avoid for Pokémon unless you are specifically collecting SGC slabs.
The decision tree
- Vintage WOTC card, raw, ungraded, planning to sell: PSA.
- Modern card, planning to sell within a few months: CGC for speed, PSA if you can wait.
- True Black Label candidate (pack-fresh, perfect-looking modern): BGS.
- Submitting in bulk for budget and you want fast: CGC.
- Collecting for yourself, no resale plan: any of the three; pick on aesthetics.
